Work Visa Solicitors
Choosing a UK work visa starts with your job, qualifications and existing immigration position. Some routes need a licensed employer; others depend on an eligible degree or recognised achievement. Compare the conditions before committing to a role, relocation or sponsorship application.

Sponsored and unsponsored routes
Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker applications depend on eligible employment and sponsorship. A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is an electronic record issued by a licensed sponsor; it is not immigration permission or a guarantee of approval.
High Potential Individual and Global Talent offer routes without employer sponsorship where their separate qualification or achievement requirements are met. Scale-up starts with sponsorship but allows greater employment flexibility after the initial six-month period. Being highly qualified does not by itself establish eligibility for any of these routes.
Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker
The Skilled Worker route requires an eligible role, an approved sponsor and the applicable salary, English-language and other requirements. Occupation codes, working hours and any transitional salary provision need checking together. Our existing Skilled Worker page explains these rules in more detail.
Health and Care Worker is part of the Skilled Worker framework for qualifying health and adult social care roles and employers. Its fee and healthcare-surcharge treatment differs, but not every healthcare job qualifies. Overseas recruitment of care workers and senior care workers under codes 6135 and 6136 is closed; specific in-country arrangements remain.
Qualifications, talent and growing businesses
HPI relies on a qualifying overseas degree awarded within the previous five years by an institution appearing on the list for that award date. A job offer is unnecessary, but qualification recognition, English, maintenance and the annual application allocation still matter.
Global Talent is for qualifying leaders or potential leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. An endorsement is normally needed, with a separate pathway for named winners of specified prestigious prizes.
Scale-up requires an initial eligible job with an approved Scale-up sponsor. Freedom to change work after six months does not remove the PAYE earnings requirements for a later extension or settlement application.
Build the evidence around the route
An application should connect the proposed activity to the correct rules rather than assemble the same documents for every visa. A sponsored role needs accurate job, salary and sponsor information; HPI focuses on the qualifying award; Global Talent evidence depends on the field and pathway.
Check English-language evidence, financial requirements and any tuberculosis or criminal-record documentation that applies. Some routes permit exemptions or sponsor-certified maintenance. Those provisions must be established, not assumed from holding another visa.
- Current passport, immigration permission and relevant application history.
- Job description, occupation code, hours, salary and CoS where sponsorship is required.
- Qualification assessment or endorsement/prize evidence for the relevant unsponsored route.
- Separate evidence for any partner or child applying with you.
Family members and longer-term plans
Dependant eligibility differs between routes and can be restricted by occupation and the worker’s immigration history. Care-worker and other medium-skilled roles have specific rules. A partner or child needs their own qualifying application; the main applicant’s grant does not automatically extend the family’s permission.
HPI is temporary and does not lead directly to settlement. Skilled Worker, qualifying Health and Care Worker, Scale-up and Global Talent can lead to settlement under their respective rules, but permission for a stated number of years is not an entitlement to indefinite leave to remain. Residence, earnings or continuing sponsorship and knowledge requirements may still apply.
Check permission before starting or changing work
An in-country switch depends on the current immigration category and route-specific conditions. Visitors cannot simply start a sponsored job after receiving an offer. Students may face course-completion or job-start restrictions, and a change of sponsored employer can require another application.
When enquiring with Highfin, describe the role or qualification, intended start date, current permission and family circumstances. Those facts help identify the advice and evidence review needed. Any professional work and fees must be agreed separately; no recruitment, sponsorship or visa outcome is promised.

Frequently asked questions
Your questions
Do all UK work visas require an employer sponsor?
No. HPI and Global Talent do not require employer sponsorship, but have their own eligibility tests. Scale-up requires sponsorship initially; Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker depend on an eligible sponsored role.
Does a Certificate of Sponsorship let me start work?
Not by itself. It supports an immigration application. You must have permission allowing the work and satisfy any requirements for changing employer or route before starting.
Is every health-sector job eligible for Health and Care Worker treatment?
No. The occupation, employer and other requirements must qualify. Care workers and senior care workers have additional recruitment and dependant restrictions.
Does every work visa lead to settlement?
No. HPI does not lead directly to settlement. Routes that permit settlement have separate residence and other conditions; a visa grant is not a promise of indefinite leave to remain.
Which details should I provide in an initial enquiry?
Give the proposed role or relevant qualification, employer if applicable, intended start date, current visa expiry date and whether family members will apply. Avoid highly sensitive documents in an initial enquiry.
