Sponsor Licence Validity and Renewal Rules
Most Worker and Temporary Worker sponsors no longer need to renew their licence every four years. That routine requirement was removed on 6 April 2024. A business looking for sponsor licence renewal advice should first establish its licensed routes, current status and any route-specific limit, then distinguish licence validity from worker visas, sponsorship allocations and ongoing compliance.

What changed in April 2024?
Current sponsor guidance says a licence generally remains valid for an indefinite period unless surrendered or revoked. This does not make sponsorship unconditional: the organisation must remain eligible and meet its duties.
This page does not offer a routine four-year renewal application. Historical renewal reminders and older service descriptions should be checked against the current rules and the organisation’s actual licence record.
The exceptions need route-specific planning
UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up sponsor licences have a maximum four-year validity under the current guidance. That exception to indefinite validity should not be mistaken for an ordinary right to renew.
Scale-up guidance expressly says the licence cannot be renewed beyond four years. An organisation wishing to retain the option of sponsoring workers afterwards must consider licensing on another appropriate route, if eligible. A UK Expansion Worker sponsor likewise needs an assessment of its route conditions and future arrangements, rather than an assumption that payment of a renewal fee will extend the licence.
Licence validity is not a worker’s permission
An organisation’s licence, its ability to assign Certificates of Sponsorship and an individual worker’s immigration permission are different things. Removal of routine licence renewal does not extend a worker’s visa.
Keep separate records of worker expiry dates, route conditions and sponsorship capacity. Before further sponsorship, check the requirements for the relevant Certificate of Sponsorship and the worker’s application; do not rely solely on the licence appearing on the sponsor register.
Review the organisation’s current position
Start with the licence reference, approved routes, rating, key personnel and recent Home Office correspondence. Establish whether there has been a suspension, revocation, surrender or other change affecting the ability to sponsor.
Changes to ownership, corporate structure or trading arrangements may trigger reporting or new licensing requirements. An existing licence should not be assumed to transfer automatically with a business sale or restructuring.
- Current licence details and sponsorship management access.
- Any notices, action plans or outstanding Home Office requests.
- Planned changes to ownership, sites, workforce or licensed routes.
Ongoing duties remain in force
Indefinite validity does not remove reporting, record-keeping or cooperation obligations. The Home Office can check compliance and take action where the sponsor is no longer suitable or breaches its duties.
Current guidance discusses inactive licences and indicates that further guidance on their management will follow. It also allows eligible sponsors to surrender a licence they no longer need. Do not infer a new universal inactivity deadline or an automatic renewal process from that notice.
Advice focused on the actual issue
A review may identify a route-validity limit, an organisational change, a worker application or a compliance issue. Those are different tasks and should be described accurately before any service is agreed.

Official guidance
- Establish the task first
- Provide the licence record and the notice or business event prompting the enquiry. A historic renewal date alone may not identify the work needed.
- Confirm any charges
- Only quote a government charge or legal fee after identifying the actual application or advice required. No routine renewal price is stated.
Frequently asked questions
Your questions
Do most sponsor licences still need renewal every four years?
No. The routine requirement was removed on 6 April 2024. Current guidance generally provides indefinite validity, subject to surrender, revocation and route-specific limits.
Are all sponsor licences indefinite?
No. UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up licences have a maximum four-year validity. The relevant route guidance must be checked.
Can a Scale-up licence simply be renewed?
No. Current Scale-up guidance says it cannot be renewed beyond four years. Continuing sponsorship may require eligibility and licensing on another route.
Does an indefinite licence extend my employees’ visas?
No. Each worker’s immigration permission and any further application remain separate from the organisation’s licence validity.
Can the Home Office still take action against an indefinite licence?
Yes. Sponsors remain subject to eligibility requirements, duties and compliance checks. Indefinite validity does not prevent suspension or revocation where the relevant grounds apply.
